Vehicle theft is still one of the biggest crimes in the United States. When it comes to vehicle theft, which includes SUVs, cars, trucks. Buses, motorcycles, and pretty any type of motor ran vehicle you can think of.

When comparing vehicle theft numbers from 2019, the numbers have increased in 2020 by a significant amount. The FBU released data stating that there were 873,080 incidents of vehicle theft, which was a 9.2% increase from 2019.

Vehicle theft happens in almost every state throughout the country, but it happens more in certain states.

Here are the top 10 cities with the highest vehicle theft rates:

  1. Detroit, Michigan. 
    Every year, Detroit experiences the most vehicle theft cases than any other state. For every 10,000 residents there, 103 vehicles are stolen per year. That equals out to 5 times the average national rate. 
  1. Springfield, Missouri.
    Coming in at the second-highest state for vehicle theft, Springfield, Missouri sees about 99 vehicles stolen per 10,000 residents. While their crime rate is decreasing slowly over time due to laws being changed, their crime rate of vehicles stolen has remained high. 
  1. Portland, Oregon.
    The third city in the US with a high vehicle theft rate in Portland. Their rate is 97 vehicles stolen per 10,000 residents. This statistic isn’t shocking since Portland is known for having high crime rates. 
  1. Albuquerque, New Mexico.
    The rate of stolen vehicles in this city is 96 vehicles per 10,000 residents. Albuquerque is one of the cities with a continuously high crime rate. 
  1. Joseph, Missouri.
    St. Joseph is one of the smaller cities on this list, but one with a high rate of vehicle theft. For every 10,000 residents, they have 84 vehicles stolen. This city’s crime rate has been on the rise since 2015. 
  1. Topeka, Kansas.
    This city’s rate for vehicle theft is 76 vehicles stolen for 10,000 residents. This is much lower than other cities, but it’s still higher than others. 
  1. Tulsa, Oklahoma.
    Tulsa has one of the highest crime rates in the United States, and its vehicle theft rate is no different. They have 75 vehicles stolen per 10,000 residents. 
  1. Bakersfield, California.
    Although this city’s crime rate is on the decline, its vehicle theft rate is still pretty high. Ranking in at 75 vehicles stolen per 10,000 residents, Bakersfield made the cut. 
  1. New Orleans, Louisiana.
    Vehicle theft rates are right in line with their overall crime rate, coming in at 74 vehicles stolen per 10,000 residents. 
  1. Vallejo, California.
    Lastly, this city in California experienced 73 vehicle thefts per 10,000 residents in recent years. While this is low on the list, it’s still a high vehicle theft rate when comparing it to the rest of the United States. 

Vehicle theft is very much real and happening. While it isn’t happening much in some states, other states deal with it on a daily, if not hourly basis. There are ways to mitigate vehicle theft, it’s just something that takes a lot of time and effort.
