Every driver knows the moment. The amber light appears halfway through a motorway journey, the garage quote comes back with an extra digit, and then the sentence that costs the most: "if you'd brought it in three months ago, this would have been a different conversation."
The warning light isn't the problem. It's the last link in a chain that started much earlier, and nobody told you the chain was forming.
A monthly AI-generated health report exists to show you the chain while it's still forming, not after it snaps. Here's what an automatic vehicle check-up contains, field by field, and how to read it — because data you can't interpret is just noise.
The real issue: most faults are found once they're expensive
For most drivers, car maintenance is reactive: something happens, then you deal with it. The service gets done when the handbook says so, or when you remember. The engine light gets looked at once it's on. The odd noise gets investigated when it becomes a very odd noise.

It looks like a trivial table, and that's the point: behind each line sits a month of ECU readings, summarised so you can absorb it in thirty seconds.
How to read it, field by field
Overall status
The traffic light: it condenses the whole analysis into one word. If it's positive, everything below is context and can wait. If it isn't, it's telling you to read the rest today rather than at the weekend.
What to do with it: treat it as a priority filter, not a diagnosis. An excellent status doesn't mean the car is flawless — it means nothing monitored is currently outside its expected range.
Distance covered
The month's mileage, read from the vehicle rather than estimated. It looks like the most trivial line in the report; in fact it's the line that makes every other line readable.
What to do with it: compare it with previous months. If you normally cover 1,200 km a month and suddenly do 2,800, every service interval arrives faster than you assumed. The reverse matters too: a 200 km month isn't a rest. Low mileage with lots of cold starts is harder on the battery and the oil than one long motorway run.
Fault codes
The diagnostic core: the codes the ECU logs when a parameter drifts outside expected values, the same ones a mechanic reads by plugging into the OBD port.
The difference is translation. A raw code like P0171 means nothing to anyone who doesn't do this for a living. Run through a plain-language analysis it becomes something like the notification example published on the product page: "Code P0171 detected — system running too lean. Estimated repair cost: €80-120. I'd recommend getting the car looked at within 7 days." Suddenly you know three things you didn't before: what happened, what it's likely to cost, and how long you've got.
What to do with it: if it says "None", file it and move on. If a code appears, read the explanation, check the estimate, respect the time window. Seven days isn't a recovery-truck emergency, but it isn't "end of the month" either.
Next oil change
The distance remaining before the next service, based on actual mileage rather than the calendar.
What to do with it: cross-reference it with the distance covered. With 3,200 km left and 1,240 km a month, the service is about two and a half months away — enough time to book when it suits you and compare quotes, rather than taking whoever can fit you in once you're overdue.
Driving style
An assessment of driving behaviour, with a direct bearing on efficiency and fuel consumption. Driving-style monitoring is one of the telemetry dashboard's functions; in the report it becomes a summary verdict for the month.
What to do with it: this is the field you have the most immediate control over. Harsh braking and aggressive acceleration don't only hit the fuel bill — they wear pads, discs, tyres and clutch at a measurably different rate. If the rating drops the cause is often mundane, a changed commute or heavier traffic, but knowing it lets you make a deliberate choice.
Estimated saving this month
An estimate of what you've saved compared with traditional reactive maintenance. Read it for what it is: an estimate, not a refund.
What to do with it: read it as a series, not in isolation. It starts making sense after six or twelve reports, when you can compare what you've invested in servicing against previous years. Geofence alerts

What "predictive" actually means
Predictive gets thrown around loosely. In onboard diagnostics it has a concrete meaning, on three levels.
The intermittent code. Plenty of faults begin with codes that appear and vanish. A sensor misreading once in twenty won't hold the warning light on, and if you visit the garage during a good spell nothing gets found. Continuous monitoring catches it every time, and recurrence is itself a finding.
The multi-month trend. This is where 36 reports change the game. A single out-of-range value says very little. The same value degrading slowly across five consecutive months says a great deal. No annual inspection can see a curve; it only sees a point.

Why plain language isn't a cosmetic choice
There's a temptation, when building a diagnostic tool, to show everything — charts, curves, raw parameters, acronyms. But technical information you can't consume is wasted. If understanding your report means searching a forum for what P0171 is, the report failed before it was read.
Receiving "system running too lean, estimated €80-120, get it seen within 7 days" isn't dumbing down for lazy users. It's the precondition for that data producing a decision. And a decision made in time is what separates a £100 job from a £600 one.
The same applies to the channel. The report lands on WhatsApp — the same app where you read everything else — alongside mileage-based service reminders and engine anomaly warnings in ordinary language. No new habit to build, and that matters: tools that require discipline get abandoned, tools that slot into an existing habit don't.
A side effect: a documented history of the car
There's a consequence here that isn't an advertised feature, but follows naturally from having 36 monthly reports in your archive.
When you sell a used car the negotiation turns on information asymmetry: you know how you looked after it, the buyer doesn't, and without evidence the price drifts towards suspicion. A stamped service book says when the services happened. A continuous run of monthly reports says something harder to fabricate after the fact: how the car behaved month by month, and which fault codes it logged.
It isn't a guarantee and it doesn't replace an independent inspection. It's documentation that didn't previously exist — and in a negotiation, documentation carries weight.
The honest limits of a report
A tool's credibility is partly measured by what it admits it can't do.
A report is not a mechanic. It flags, explains and estimates. It doesn't dismantle or repair anything, and doesn't replace the judgement of someone with the car on a ramp. A cost estimate is an order of magnitude so you don't walk into the quote unprepared, not a contractual price.
It reads what the ECU exposes. OBD-II covers a great deal, but not everything: worn dampers, corrosion or an unevenly worn tyre don't come through the diagnostic port. Periodic visual checks are still necessary.
Estimates are estimates. Monthly saving, distance remaining, recommended window: calculations on real data, not certainties. They rank priorities, they don't end the discussion.
You need an OBD port. The device works on any petrol, diesel or hybrid vehicle from 1996 onwards, but isn't applicable to pure electric vehicles without an OBD port.
In practice: three minutes on the first of the month
- Read the overall status. It tells you how much attention the rest deserves.
- Check the fault codes. The explanation already gives you severity, cost and timing.
- Compare the mileage with last month. It's the key to interpreting every deadline.
- Look at the driving style. It's the only line you can act on tomorrow morning.
- Diarise the AI recommendation. Convert the distance into a rough date.
- Keep the report. One document is worth little; the series is worth a lot.
After three or four months the exercise changes character: you stop reading the report as a school report and start reading it as a graph. That's when maintenance becomes something you plan rather than something that happens to you.
Why any of this matters
An automatic monthly check-up won't make your car immortal or remove the garage from your life. It does something more modest and useful: it moves the moment you find things out.
Knowing in February that you'll need an air filter in September, or spotting a fault code while the fix is still a two-figure job, isn't spectacular technology. It's the difference between investing deliberately and being handed a bill you hadn't planned for.
And when you think about it, the amber light on the motorway was never the real problem. The real problem was reaching that light without ever having had a chance to act sooner.
