The roof box is back in the garage, the sand in the footwells has settled in for the winter, and the car is parked outside looking exactly as it did in June. As far as you're concerned the holiday is over. As far as the car is concerned, it has just finished the hardest fortnight of its working year.

A long summer trip is one of the most demanding things you will ever ask of a vehicle: fifteen hundred miles in two weeks, a boot loaded to the roofline with a box on top, temperatures in the mid-thirties, hours of motorway at a constant cruise, a mountain pass, a ferry queue with the engine idling, coastal air full of salt. None of it breaks a modern car on the spot. But almost all of it leaves a mark, and the marks nobody looks for become October's breakdown.

Why a Long Trip Is Such a Hard Ask

Every item on the checklist traces back to a specific cause.

The load. Four adults, luggage and a roof box easily add 300-400 kg, which changes ride height, suspension loading, braking distances and the tyre pressures the car actually needs. The heat. A cooling system that works at 30% of capacity on a January commute runs at 100% in an August queue outside Bordeaux — and the same goes for engine oil, air conditioning and the battery.

The motorway hours. Cruising for six hours isn't restful for an engine: it means sustained load with the turbo hot and the exhaust at full temperature throughout. The environment. Salt spray on the coast, dust on unmade roads, insects in the radiator matrix, fuel of variable quality abroad, long descents with the brakes working continuously.

1. Tyres: the First Check, and the Most Neglected

If you only have time for one thing, do this one.

Reset the pressures. Before you left you inflated for a fully loaded car, often 4-7 psi above normal. The car is empty again now, and driving like that means uneven wear across the centre of the tread. Check them cold, using the normal-load figures on the door shut placard.

Read the wear pattern, not just the depth. Heavier wear on the outer shoulders points to underinflation or a lot of loaded cornering; wear in the middle points to overinflation; wear on one side only points to an alignment problem — classic after a pothole at motorway speed or a kerbed wheel in a tight village.

Inspect the sidewalls. This is where the most dangerous damage hides: bulges caused by an impact against a kerb. A sidewall bulge means the tyre is scrap. Run your hand around the full circumference, including the inner face nobody ever looks at.

The UK legal minimum is 1.6 mm, but wet-weather grip falls off noticeably below 3 mm — and September brings the first proper rain.

2. Brakes: Mountain Descents Send the Bill Later

If the trip involved an Alpine pass or a lot of braking with the car heavily loaded, the system reached temperatures it never sees on a normal week.

4. Filters and Air Conditioning

The engine air filter can be significantly dirtier after dusty roads, and a clogged filter costs fuel and performance. The cabin filter is the one nobody ever changes and the one that suffers most after three weeks of air conditioning at full tilt in humid, pollen-heavy air; if the vents smell musty, this is almost always the culprit, and on many cars it's a DIY job behind the glovebox.

Check cooling performance too: if the A/C cools less well than it used to, it may be the filter or it may be refrigerant loss, and a struggling system makes the expensive part — the compressor — work harder. Lastly the radiators: a crust of insects across the cooling pack genuinely reduces heat exchange. Clean it with low-pressure water, never a pressure washer held close.

5. The Walk-Around

Lights and headlamp aim. A car loaded heavily at the rear sits nose-up and dazzles oncoming traffic: if you turned the levelling dial up for the trip, turn it back, and check every bulb while you're there.

Wipers. Sun, heat and insects destroy rubber faster than rain does. If they smear, replace them before the autumn weather arrives.

Paint and underbody. If the car spent time near the sea, salt is everywhere, including sills and wheel arches, so a wash with an underbody rinse is well worth it. Check the bonnet and bumper for stone chips too: bare metal in a salty environment becomes rust within months.

While you were heading south, the ECU was doing what it always does: monitoring dozens of parameters against expected values. When something falls outside those limits the system logs a diagnostic trouble code. And here's what most drivers don't know: not every code turns on a light.

Pending codes are logged the first time a fault appears — the ECU records it and waits to see whether it repeats on the next drive cycle. Stored codes are set once the fault recurs and, depending on severity, may illuminate the engine management light. Plenty of pending codes never reach confirmed status during a trip. They simply sit there, invisible.

Which means the dashboard warning light is a lagging indicator: it comes on once a problem is established, not when it starts. Leaving the car standing for weeks brings its own problems, usually underestimated. Flat-spotted tyres: a tyre carrying the same weight on the same patch of rubber develops a temporary flat spot, felt as a vibration for the first few miles that normally goes as the tyre warms up — if it doesn't, that's a problem. Rusted or seized brakes: damp plus immobility gives a film of surface rust on the discs (normal, it scrubs off) and in worse cases pads stuck to the disc or a seized handbrake cable.

Then there are dried seals and unwanted guests. Heat and inactivity dry out door seals, and a stationary, sheltered engine bay is an attractive home for rodents, which can chew through wiring looms and coolant hoses. A torch and two minutes under the bonnet before the first start is not paranoia.

Book the Garage Now, or Wait for the Next Service?

Go now if you have brake judder, an illuminated engine management light (immediately if it's flashing), a visible leak, a dropping coolant level, a new noise that changes with road speed or steering, or sidewall damage to a tyre. It can wait for a musty cabin filter, smearing wipers, small stone chips, pads still within limits, or an insect-covered radiator.

Bring the service forward if the trip added serious mileage: fifteen hundred miles in a fortnight can move your interval months earlier. Work from the odometer, not the reminder — and check the MOT date, which has a habit of arriving in early September.
